TOPIC: SELECTION OF THE KING TEXT: 1 Samuel 10:17-27 (NKJV) 10:17 Then Samuel called the people together to the LORD at Mizpah, 10:18 and said to the children of Israel, "Thus says the LORD God of Israel: 'I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians from the hand of all kingdoms and from those who oppressed you.' 10:19 "But you have today rejected your God, who Himself saved you from all your adversities and your tribulations; and you have said to Him, 'No, set a king over us!' Now therefore, present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and by your clans." 10:20 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was chosen. 10:21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was chosen. And Saul the son of Kish was chosen. But when they sought him, he could not be found. 10:22 Therefore they inquired of the LORD further, "Has the man come here yet?" And the LORD answered, "There he is, hidden among the equipment." 10:23 So they ran and brought him from there; and when he stood among the people, he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. 10:24 And Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see him whom the LORD has chosen, that no one like him among all the people?" So all the people shouted and said, "Long live the king!" 10:25 Then Samuel explained to the people the behavior of royalty, and wrote in a book and laid up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house. 10:26 And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and valiant went with him, whose hearts God had touched. 10:27 But some rebels said, "How can this man save us?" So they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace. STUDY: Saul had been privately anointed by Samuel (1 Sam.10:1), but since he was to serve the Israelites, it was necessary that the people should be involved. Samuel ensured the tribes realized that God was in charge of the selection process. When the tribes presented themselves, the tribe of Benjamin was selected. The method used could have been by casting lots (1 Sam. 14:40-42) or using the Urim and Thummim to determine God's will (Ex. 28:30). The public confirmed Saul’s selection as king when they accepted him by shouting “Long live the king” (v.24). Despite this, there were some who showed contempt for Saul’s selection, doubting his ability to lead. However, Saul demonstrated maturity as a leader by holding his peace. Samuel also took the time to explain the regulations of kingship to the people, ensuring transparency and understanding of leadership roles. God stirred up some valiant men whose hearts He had touched to support Saul in his new role. Similarly, we need reliable and valiant men and women to serve in leadership positions in our governments, workplaces, and churches today. Leaders should never expect 100% solidarity from everyone after their election but must focus on serving their people and displaying maturity in dealing with opposition. But the key question remains: are leaders in our nations today truly selected by God and the people? Regardless of how leadership is chosen, we must pray for our leaders and respect their authority. Do you pray for your leader or treat them with contempt? Be like Samuel, someone who seeks and brings the will of God to pass in your generation. PRAYER: Dear Lord, give us good leaders in our nation. Amen. Conclusion The anointing and appointment of Saul as Israel’s king show us that true leadership comes from God and is accompanied by responsibility and humility. Just as Saul had the support of valiant men whose hearts God had touched, we need godly leaders in our governments, workplaces, and churches today. Even when there is opposition, mature leaders remain focused on their mission, knowing they are called to serve. As Christians, we are called to pray for our leaders, seeking God’s guidance in all aspects of leadership, whether in the Anglican Communion or beyond.
