The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is investigating the naira abuse case involving Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.

The investigation began after a video circulated from Tompolo’s birthday celebration. The video showed people spraying naira notes while the celebrant was dancing.

The video sparked public criticism and calls from the public to take action against Tompolo as they have done for other individuals for the same offence. The EFCC had stated that Tompolo will be investigated given that “nobody is above the law.”

Ola Olukoyede, the chairman of EFCC, has urged the public to refrain from jumping into conclusions as the allegations are still under investigation.

He also said that the video is under forensic analysis to determine if it is authentic and has not been manipulated using Artificial Intelligence.

Olukoyede said that Tompolo will be prosecuted if the investigation is concluded and he has a case with the court. The act of money spraying is considered illegal and an abuse of the Nigerian naira under Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007.
