TOPIC: YOU SHALL RECEIVE POWER
TEXT: Acts 1:1-8(NKJV)
- 1:1. The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
- 1:2. until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen,
- 1:3. to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
- 1:4. And being assembled together with [them,] He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” [He said,] “you have heard from Me;
- 1:5. “for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
- 1:6. Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”
- 1:7. And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.
- 1:8. “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
STUDY:
In our text today, we see Jesus speaking to his disciples just before He ascended into heaven.
He had finished his earthly ministry and was to hand over the baton of ministry to his disciples who needed divine power to continue the work of the kingdom that He had started, therefore He instructed them to wait in Jerusalem until they received the power from on high.
They waited, received the power and began to evangelize. There are biblical preparations that release divine power for the ministry. These include praying, fasting, having a burden for the work of God, sincerity of purpose, clean motives, etc. The power of the Holy Spirit is not for showing off; it is to enable us live for and serve God.
We must not jump into the work of God depending on our human energy and expect a divine result. And this power, when received, must be engaged based on principles of holiness, service and a sense of accountability.
This is the day of his power. Prepare yourself for divine outpouring of this power; ask the Lord to thoroughly purge your motive and fill you with his Spirit for the work of the ministry. Then you will be a witness for Christ.
PRAYER:
Lord, fill me afresh with the power from on high.
