Church of Nigeria Mourns the Passing of Bishop Owen Ukafia of Uyo Diocese

Tragedy struck the Diocese of Uyo, Anglican Communion today 16th of September 2025 as it lost its chief shepherd, The Rt. Rev. Amos Ukafia to death after a very brief illness.

The Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion announced the death of the revered bishop at the end of the consecration and presentation service held today during the second edition of the Standing Committee meeting holding at Ado- Ekiti.

The Primate requested the Church to keep the family he left behind in prayers as the congregation stood for a minute silence to honor the departed soul.

The Rt. Rev. Owen Amos Ukafia, JP, was born on December 5, 1962, in Okoroete, Eastern Obolo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

He was ordained a Deacon in 1994 by the Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Nglass, then Bishop of the Diocese of Uyo, and priested the following year. He was subsequently appointed Vicar of St. John the Baptist Church, Ikot Ekpene. He was preferred a Canon of the Cathedral Church of All Saints in 2002 and collated Archdeacon in 2006 by the same bishop.

He was elected as the Bishop of Uyo on the 8th day of February 2024 at the episcopal synod held at Ika Diocese and consecrated on the 19th of March 2024 at the Cathedral Church of Our Saviours, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

Late Bishop Owen Amos Ukafia is known as a mission-minded leader, seasoned administrator, and reconciler. He was happily married to Lady Zilpah Owen Ukafia, and their union is blessed with children.

Burial arrangements will be communicated in the days ahead.
