President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that he has instructed the establishment of potential military operations against Nigeria, citing the ongoing violence targeting Christians in the West African nation.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump asserted that the Nigerian government must take immediate steps to halt what he described as an “ongoing genocide” against its Christian population.
“I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action,” Trump wrote. He further threatened a swift, aggressive military response, stating, “If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our cherished Christians!”.
He concluded with a direct warning: “Warning: The Nigerian government better move fast!”
Trump additionally threatened to cut off all U.S. aid to Nigeria. He called upon Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian president to implement proactive measures to tackle the security situation immediately.
The President warned that failure to act could lead to the U.S. conducting military action to “wipe out Islamic terrorists.”
“If the Nigerian government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” the American leader added.
President Trump’s comments follow the White House’s designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern just a day earlier, a move that came after weeks of pressure from prominent American political figures to address the violence against Christians in the country.
