Standing Committee Meeting of the Church of Nigeria Begins In Abuja

The 2022 Second Edition of the Standing Committee Meeting of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, kicks off today 12th to 16th September 2022 at the Church of Nigeria Secretariat, St. Mathias House Gudu Abuja.

The Standing Committee Meeting is an arm of the general synod of the Church of Nigeria, which is the highest decision-making body of the church. The Synod holds once every three years.

The Standing committee meeting holds twice annually, to take decisions on critical issues that requires attention before the General Synod.

Over 160 bishops and their wives are expected to attend the meeting which will be presided over by the Archbishop Metropolitan and Primate of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, The Most Rev’d Dr. Henry Ndukuba. He has welcomed all Archbishops, Bishops, and their Wives, Church of Nigeria Officials, Diocesan Legal Officers, Clergy Representatives, Women Delegates and National Mothers Union Executives to Abuja.

The theme for this meeting is ‘Your Kingdom Come, Your Will be Done” with Bible emphasis from the book of Matthew 6:10.

Today, the first day of the meeting, is for arrival and registration of delegates. There will also be rehearsals for the consecration of newly elected bishops on Tuesday the 13th, which is the second day of the conference.

Highlights of Tuesday’s Programs for the event starts from 8am (WAT) with the consecration of new bishops at the Cathedral Church of Advent, Life Camp, Gwarinpa, after which the delegates are to return to the venue of the meeting at St. Mathias House for the business of the day. The meeting will play host to the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu who will deliver a lecture on the 2023 general election preparations.

Elected bishops to be consecrated on Tuesday 13 September 2022 are:

1. Venerable Benjamin Enwuchola, Chief Protocol of the CoN now the Bishop-Elect of Otukpo Diocese.

2. Rev’d Canon Prince Christian Ayim, a priest from Aba Diocese as the Bishop-Elect of Isuikwuato/Umunneochi.

3. Very Rev’d Dr. Isaac Adeyemi Adeniji, the Provost of St. Peter’s Cathedral, Ake, Abeokuta in Egba Diocese as the Bishop-Elect of Ilaje Diocese.

Also, Bishop Abiodun Olaoye of Osun North Diocese will be presented as the new Archbishop of the Province of Ibadan.

Bishops that were translated at the last Episcopal synod held in Lagos in July had been enthroned in their respective dioceses. They are:

1. Bishop Olushola Ajayi of Ekiti-Kwara now in Ekiti Diocese.

2. Bishop Emmanuel Okojaja of Niger-Delta West now in Niger-Delta Diocese.

3. Bishop Williams Aladekugbe of Oyo Diocese now in Diocese of Ibadan-North.

4 Bishop Conelius Adagbada of Oke-Ogun Diocese now in Diocese of Ekiti West.

There are indications that the vacant sees will get elected bishops at the standing committee meeting holding in Abuja.
