Kwara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been given a September 9 deadline by the National Economic Council (NEC) to submit their reports on the establishment of state police.
This deadline was announced on Wednesday by Bayo Lawal, Acting Governor of Oyo, following a NEC meeting chaired by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Lawal noted that if the states fail to meet this deadline, the NEC will take decisive actions. He explained that the deadline is in response to ongoing security issues across various regions, including the northeast, north-central, southwest, southeast, and south-south.
“Today, all states were expected to provide their reports for NEC’s consideration. However, four states did not meet this requirement,” Lawal said. “The NEC has now instructed that these states must submit their reports by Monday, September 9th. Failure to do so will result in NEC making binding decisions regarding the establishment of state police for those states.”
The federal government set up a committee in February to explore state police creation, and by March, NEC had reported that 20 states had not yet submitted their reports on the matter.
