Scores of youths in Edu and Pategi local government areas of Kwara State, on Monday, joined the Young Progressives Party (YPP) during the flag off of the party’s membership registration in the state.
Led by the coordinator of a political group, the All Progressives Youth Forum (APYF), Comrade Muhammad Sulayman Baba, the youth also declared their support for the YPP Ballot Revolution programme.
The youth, who lamented the alleged “use and dump” style of some politicians in the state, said that, “it is time to work for our generation.”
Receiving the decampees at the event in Edu and Pategi local governments, the state chairman of YPP, Mr Charles Folayan, said that YPP is the home for every young person who is serious about good governance and inclusive politics with a view to moving Kwara state and Nigeria forward.
Folayan, who said that ‘youth inclusion’ in politics and governance is just a buzzword among some political parties, added that the scenario would remain so for years to come, adding that YPP would guarantee the involvement of well-meaning youth in politics and governance.
He lamented the level of insecurity, poverty and unemployment among the youth, saying that the situation would change when the youth rally around the YPP and take control of their own future.
“It is no longer news that Nigeria is now the poverty capital of the world, where the unemployment rate has jumped from 27.1per cent in the second quarter of 2020 to 33.5per cent in the fourth quarter. Yet, some people still want us to continue to praise this government like sycophants.
“Sadly, the majority of victims of kidnapping and banditry are students and youth. School campuses, farms and even homes are no longer safe. Food scarcity is becoming alarming, as evidenced by skyrocketing food prices.
“We cannot fold our arms and allow our fathers, mothers, wives and children to starve to death. We must enthrone credible leaders to salvage the situation through the 2023 Ballot Revolution.”
The chairman also urged the youth to organize and demand local government elections from the present administration, saying that only a functional and autonomous local government system can guarantee true democracy, youth inclusion and grassroots development.
