In response to escalating protests against hunger, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has declared a 24-hour curfew.

At a press conference held at the Government House on Thursday, the governor explained, “After careful consideration, we have decided that a 24-hour curfew is necessary to prevent further looting, vandalism, and harm to innocent citizens.”

He instructed all security agencies in the state to enforce the curfew to restore peace. “It is with a heavy heart that I address you today regarding the unfortunate events during the recent peaceful protest,” he said.

The governor recalled a town hall meeting held on July 31, 2024, with stakeholders, including religious leaders, business community leaders, traditional leaders, academia, technocrats, youth and women’s groups, and civil society organizations. He acknowledged the protesters’ constitutional right to demonstrate, urged them to remain peaceful, and assured them that their grievances would be forwarded to the President.

“Earlier today, we received the representatives of the peaceful protesters, who submitted their demands in writing. I promised to deliver these to the President. While I commend the majority of peaceful protesters, it is regrettable that the protest was hijacked by thugs and hoodlums, leading to looting, vandalism, and violence. These miscreants, aided by enemies of the State, have caused significant destruction of private and public properties,” Yusuf explained.

“After thorough deliberations during an Emergency State Security Council meeting, it was collectively decided that a 24-hour curfew should be enforced to prevent further chaos. Based on the powers conferred on me by the Constitution, I declare a 24-hour curfew in the State with immediate effect,” he continued.

“This action is to ensure the full protection of your lives and properties, as well as public assets, places of worship, and business premises. I urge all citizens to remain vigilant and work together to maintain peace and harmony. Let us not allow the actions of a few individuals to divide us. Together, we can overcome all challenges and build a stronger, more resilient Kano State,” the governor urged.

He directed all security agencies to ensure full compliance with the curfew.

Yusuf is the third governor to impose a curfew due to the negative turn of events during the protests. Governors Babagana Zulum of Borno and Mai Mala Buni of Yobe had previously taken similar measures to restore calm.
