The Archbishop Vining Memorial Cathedral Church celebrated its 60th anniversary with a resounding call to innovate and engage the youth.

The commemorative event culminated in an award ceremony honoring distinguished individuals and clergy associated with the church, as well as the unveiling of a commemorative book titled “Chronicle.”

Professor Folasade Ogunsola, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, delivered a keynote lecture at the anniversary, emphasizing the imperative for the church to evolve in response to contemporary challenges. Reflecting on the church’s growth from its modest beginnings as a 50-member congregation to its current strength of over 8000 members, she lauded its profound societal impact across six decades.

“The church has made immeasurable impacts through charitable initiatives, homeless support, prison outreach, and more. Countless lives have been transformed through its counseling services. Additionally, the church has played a vital role in cultural enrichment, advocacy, and social justice,” Professor Ogunsola remarked.

Despite acknowledging the church’s significant contributions, she urged Archbishop Vining Cathedral to introspectively reassess its approach to attract younger members. “We cannot afford complacency. Engaging young people involves mentoring, avoiding shame, and tackling controversial issues while providing a sense of purpose and relevance,” she emphasized, highlighting evolving youth attitudes towards religion.

“The current generation questions the relevance of traditional religious practices and seeks authenticity and practical connections in sermons,” Ogunsola observed, expressing confidence in the Cathedral’s ability to adapt while maintaining the integrity of its faith.

The event also featured the launch of “Chronicle,” a meticulously researched book chronicling the church’s historical journey from a small parish to a prominent cathedral. Mr. Lanre Idowu, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of Diamond Publications, reviewed the publication, praising it as a testament to the church’s growth and influence.

Representing Lagos State’s First Lady, Dr. Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwoolu, Mrs. Abimbola Odumbaku extended congratulations to the Cathedral on its milestone anniversary. She commended the dedication of clergy and laity, past and present, in service to God and humanity, underscoring the event as a celebration of collective commitment and faith.
