TOPIC: FEAR GOD, NOT MAN

TEXT: Proverbs 29:17-27(NKJV)

29:17.  Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul.

29:18.  Where [there is] no revelation, the people cast off restraint; But happy [is] he who keeps the law.

29:19.  A servant will not be corrected by mere words; For though he understands, he will not respond.

29:20.  Do you see a man hasty in his words? [There is] more hope for a fool than for him.

29:21.  He who pampers his servant from childhood Will have him as a son in the end.

29:22.  An angry man stirs up strife, And a furious man abounds in transgression.

29:23.  A man’s pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor.

29:24.  Whoever is a partner with a thief hates his own life; He swears to tell the truth, but reveals nothing.

29:25.  The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe.

29:26.  Many seek the ruler’s favor, But justice for man [comes] from the LORD.

29:27.  An unjust man [is] an abomination to the righteous, And [he who is] upright in the way [is] an abomination to the wicked.

STUDY:

One of the burdens of every man is the fear of his fellow man. We so much fear man’s disapproval, rebuke and discipline. In fact, it’s such that many would rather offend God than man, and seek man’s approval than God’s. This fear can so weaken us not to take action and keep us silent when we should speak. It feels powerful, but its power is deceptive. That’s why Proverbs 29:25 tells us, “The fear of man brings snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe.” This means that the fear of man is an evil trap. That is why both Moses and Jesus commanded us to love and fear the Lord, not man (Deut.6:5; Matt 22:37).

Beloved, do you fear man more than God? Remember, you obey the one that you fear and you ascribe the most authority to the person you fear most. As a Christian, you are to fear God and seek the eternal reward and approval that He gives. Fear the terrible eternal curse of God’s disapproval more than insignificant man’s disapproval. The fear of the Lord is safe because He really is God and He alone can destroy both the soul and body in hell. Lay aside every fear of man by confessing your fear of man as sin to God, and repent. Don’t fear what people think, fear what God thinks.

PRAYER:

Dear Lord, deliver me from the fear of man and help me to fear, love and trust you always, Amen.
