Topic: FRUITLESS LABOUR
Text: Micah 6:9-16
6:9 The Lord’s voice cries to the city— Wisdom shall see Your name: “Hear the rod! Who has appointed it?
6:10 Are there yet the treasures of wickedness… In the house of the wicked, And the short measure that is an abomination?
6:11 Shall I count pure those with the wicked scales, And with the bag of deceitful weights?
6:12For her rich men are full of violence, Her inhabitants have spoken lies, And their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.
6:13 “Therefore I will also make you sick by striking you, By making you desolate because of your sins.
6:14 You shall eat, but not be satisfied; [a]Hunger shall be in your midst. You may carry some away,[b] but shall not save them; And what you do rescue I will give over to the sword.
6:15 “You shall sow, but not reap; You shall tread the olives, but not anoint yourselves with oil; And make sweet wine, but not drink wine.
6:16 For the statutes of Omri are kept; All the works of Ahab’s house are done; And you walk in their counsels,
That I may make you a [c]desolation, And your inhabitants a hissing. Therefore you shall bear the reproach of [d]My people.”
STUDY:
The thought of harvest is a great motivation for every worker. Likewise, the thought of holding the trophy motivates athletes and knocks out tiredness and fatigue (Heb. 12:2). But in a situation where the expected harvest is certain to be wasted, as we have it in today’s text (vv. 14, 15), calls for serious measures to be taken. Our text presents a fruitless labour which is brought about by God, and not by witches. It is a divine judgement against wickedness among God’s own people (vv. 12-14). Such labour will be like pouring water into the basket (Job 11:20; Prov. 13:12). At the time when they should enjoy rest, God would suddenly show up to blow off their harvest (v. 15; Isa. 48:22).
It is the eternal destiny of God’s enemies to fail. Therefore, do not make yourself God’s enemy because you cannot prevail against Him (Acts 9:5). The reason for your frustration over business, work or children, may not necessarily be the devil. It may be that God Himself is against you. Hence, break off your wickedness by being righteous and your iniquities by showing mercy (Dan. 4:27).
