6:27 “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
6:28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.
6:29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.
6:30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back.
6:31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.
6:32 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.
6:33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
6:34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back.
6:35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, [a]hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.
6:36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.
STUDY:
In today’s text, Jesus delivers a revolutionary teaching on love, forgiveness, and generosity. He calls His followers to love their enemies, bless those who curse them, and give without expecting anything in return. This passage emphasises the nature of God’s kingdom, where mercy triumphs over judgment and grace exceeds human expectations. Jesus’ instruction to “be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (v. 36) reflects God’s character, setting the standard for Christian conduct.
The principle of giving back in verses 37-38, shows that the measure we use toward others determines what we receive, underscoring the call to show divine compassion and fairness.
For believers in Christ, this passage challenges us to reflect God’s unconditional love in our relationships. In a world often driven by revenge and self-interest, we are called to extend mercy and forgiveness, demonstrating Christ-like character, even to those who wrong us. As Christians, when we practise generosity and kindness, we inspire others to seek Jesus. By living out this radical love, we not only fulfil Jesus’ command but also experience the overflowing blessings of God’s favour and peace in our lives.
Prayer:
Teach us Lord to love as you love, showing mercy and grace even when it is difficult. Amen
