TOPIC: ZEALOUS AND SACRIFICIAL DISCIPLES
TEXT: John 19:38-42(NKJV)
19:38. After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave [him] permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus.
19:39. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.
19:40. Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.
19:41. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
19:42. So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation [Day,] for the tomb was nearby.
STUDY:
At the point of our text today, Christ had died on the Cross and paid the price for salvation for the sins of the world. He did this to redeem us from eternal judgment and destruction, and to translate us from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of God. The basis for being a disciple of Jesus Christ therefore is the acceptance of this price and turn away from sin in genuine repentance.
In our text, we observe two persons who had secretly accepted to be disciples of Jesus. These persons are Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus who demonstrated sacrificial zeal towards Christ. Joseph of Arimathea applied to take Jesus’ body to bury it in his tomb; Nicodemus brought expensive spices to give Jesus a befitting burial, as it were in the circumstance.
Being a disciple of Jesus Christ comes with personal cost. Jesus deserves the sacrifice of our time, spiritual gifts and talents, resources, and if need be, even our lives! Our sacrifices should come with passion and zeal, with cost, as a sweet smelling aroma to the Lord. The quality of our sacrifices is an expression of how we value Christ. Jesus died for you-what have you done for him?
PRAYER:
You gave your all to redeem me that I may have eternal life. Stir up my spirit, O Lord, to be committed to zealous and sacrificial service to you.
