A Cashier with the Badagry branch of Wema Bank Plc, Adeyemi Shola, 30, has been arrested and arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court for allegedly stealing the sum N625,515 from his employer’s account.

A Police source said that the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Ikoyi Police Station, Lagos, Tijani Mustapha directed a team led by Ijatuyi Tope to arrest and investigate the accused following a complaint by the management of Wema Bank Plc that the accused had stolen money from its account.

The accused, a resident of Badagry was arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate Court, on a three-count charge of felony to wit, stealing.

Police Counsel, Edward Abiodun informed the court in charge No. K/71/2017 that the accused committed the alleged crime in October, 2017 at Wema bank Plc, Lagos during working hours.

Abiodun told the court that the accused used his position as a cashier with the bank to fraudulently withdrew the sum of N625,515 from the accounts of Wema Bank without authority and converted same to his use.

He said the management of Wema Bank Plc uncovered the fraud when they audited their account books, leading to the arrest of the accused.

Abiodun stated that the accused also forged the signature of one Asanba Saturday Michael, a customer of Wema Bank to perpetrate the alleged fraud.

Abiodun said that the offences the accused committed were punishable under sections 411, 287 and 365 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the alleged crime in the open court and Magistrate O.O Kusanu granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Kusanu adjourned the case till 30 January, 2018 for mention and ordered that the defendant be kept at the Ikoyi Prison, Lagos till he was able to perfect the bail conditions.
