Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University students are facing strong criticism from the Makurdi Catholic Diocese for their inappropriate use of Catholic clerical robes during a recent school event.
The students reportedly wore the sacred attire as part of a drama celebrating their graduation, which has led to widespread outrage on social media. In response, the Catholic Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (CAMPAN), Makurdi Diocese, condemned the act as a serious disrespect to the Catholic Church and its values.
CAMPAN Chairman Hembadoon Orsar’s statement described the incident as a mockery of the Catholic faith and a violation of the dignity of Reverend Sisters, who are known for their modest attire. “This act shows a blatant disregard for the Catholic faith and its principles. It is a direct affront to the esteemed image of Reverend Sisters, who dress modestly to honor God,” the statement read.
The association emphasized that clerical robes used in artistic or dramatic contexts should faithfully represent their original significance and not distort or demean religious symbols. They also criticized the university for allowing such an event, accusing it of failing to educate students about the sensitivity of religious matters. The media group expressed disappointment over what they considered “indecent behavior” that undermines Catholic values.
CAMPAN urged the university to take immediate corrective action to address the issue and prevent future occurrences. They concluded by reminding the public that freedom of expression must be balanced with respect for others’ beliefs, especially when it concerns religious symbols.
