A major earthquake struck Tibet’s mountainous region on Tuesday morning, leaving at least 95 people dead and 130 injured, according to Chinese state media, as reported by the BBC.

The tremor, with a magnitude of 7.1, hit Shigatse, a holy city in Tibet, around 09:00 local time (01:00 GMT), at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), based on data from the US Geological Survey. The quake was followed by several aftershocks, and tremors were also felt in neighboring Nepal and parts of India.

Earthquakes are frequent in this region, which lies along a major geological fault line.

This earthquake is one of the deadliest to strike China in recent years.

Videos from China’s state broadcaster CCTV captured the destruction, showing collapsed buildings and homes, with rescue teams working through debris and distributing blankets to locals.

In Tingri county, near the epicenter, temperatures are currently around -8°C (17.6°F), and they are expected to drop to -18°C later in the evening, according to the China Meteorological Administration.

Power and water supplies in the region have also been disrupted.
