At least 17 members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) have drowned while attempting to cross a river along the Nigeria-Niger Republic border.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the river lies between the Kafetoa and Bulabulin Gaidam communities in Yobe State.

The insurgents were reportedly trying to reach Tam village in the Niger Republic, near the Kannamma settlement in Yobe, when they were caught by the river’s strong currents and drowned.

Intelligence sources cited by the publication revealed that the militants had been displaced from several of their strongholds, including Bulabulin Geidam, Chettimari, and Diffa along the Nigeria-Niger border.
