The Department of State Services (DSS) has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking a court order to halt public rallies organized or participated in by Professor Pat Utomi, the renowned political economist, citing concerns over potential disruption of public peace and order.

The security agency’s move comes amidst Professor Utomi’s recent public statements and activities, which include advocating for a national dialogue and mobilizing citizens for what he describes as “citizen action” to address pressing national issues.

The DSS, in its court filing, argues that these planned rallies pose a security risk, citing intelligence reports alleging that such gatherings could be exploited by elements seeking to cause unrest.

The matter indicates that the DSS is particularly wary of the current socio-economic climate in the country, believing that large public gatherings could easily escalate into protests or civil disturbances.

They contend that their action is a proactive measure to maintain national security and prevent any breakdown of law and order.

Professor Utomi is a vocal critic of government policies and a proponent of good governance, has been at the forefront of various civil society initiatives. His recent calls for public engagement have garnered significant attention, leading to this legal challenge from the DSS.
