Calls have been made for the federal government to enforce the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act of 2013, with the aim of deterring the growing acceptance of transgender individuals in Nigeria.
Rt. Hon Commander Steve Adehi, the National President of the Association of Papal Knights and Medalists in Nigeria, highlighted the issue during a press conference at the 16th Annual National Conference of the association. The conference, held under the theme, *”Living an Authentic Catholic Life: Challenges and Opportunities in Nigeria,”* focused on the challenges facing Nigerian society, particularly with the rise of transgender figures like Okuneye Idris, also known as Bobrisky.
Adehi reaffirmed the Church’s firm opposition to practices contrary to traditional gender roles, stating, “The position of the Church is very clear. We oppose individuals living in a way that contradicts their biological sex, such as men dressing as women or women dressing as men. The Church condemns these practices in their entirety.”
He also called attention to the issue of inadequate leadership training in the country, urging both federal and state governments to adopt Catholic social teachings as essential qualifications for leadership roles.
