……..Amid the growing wave of kidnappings in Ondo State

The Catholic Bishop in Ondo State, Bishop Jude Arogundade, has called on the state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to take immediate and decisive steps to address the growing insecurity in the state.

The bishop made this appeal on Palm Sunday after celebrating Mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral. He stressed that the current security challenges require urgent and well-coordinated efforts from both state and federal authorities to ensure the safety of residents and their property.

Arogundade expressed serious concern over the increasing rate of kidnappings and other criminal activities, accusing government authorities of not being proactive enough. According to him, there are signs that criminal groups are gradually finding their way into Akure, the state capital.

He warned that if the situation is not tackled quickly, it could worsen and lead to more frequent and deadly attacks across the state.

“I don’t think our government is serious. If you look at Akure, it is being invaded. These strange people are coming in, taking over strategic places, and the government claims ignorance.

“They are gradually taking hold, and everyone appears helpless until they begin to strike again. These people have practically declared war against Nigeria and its citizens,” he added.

The cleric also criticised attempts by some authorities to minimise the severity of the security crisis, insisting that the level of violence being witnessed demands strong and responsible leadership.

He further lamented the loss of lives within his diocese, noting that the situation reflects a wider national issue that can no longer be ignored.

According to him, the speed at which insecurity is spreading in Akure is troubling and raises serious concerns about the safety of residents, making urgent intervention necessary.

Within a short time, Akure has been invaded, yet the government says it is unaware. Even a child on the street knows what is happening. This is unacceptable,” he said.

While encouraging citizens to remain vigilant and prayerful, Arogundade maintained that the primary responsibility for security lies with the government.

He said, “We have to pray, that is our duty as Christians, but the government must take responsibility. The protection of lives and property is the primary duty of any government.”

Speaking on the significance of Palm Sunday, he explained that it marks the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem and signals the beginning of Holy Week,a period when Christians reflect on sacrifice, suffering, and redemption.

The bishop’s comments add to growing concerns over insecurity in Ondo State and intensify calls for stronger security measures to prevent further attacks and safeguard lives.
