Police officers on Tuesday fired tear gas to disperse residents, journalists and political figures gathered at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos for a memorial honouring victims of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.
Among those affected were the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate, Funso Doherty.
The memorial was organised by the Enough is Enough movement to commemorate those who lost their lives during the #EndSARS protests.
However, police officers deployed to the venue disrupted the gathering by firing tear gas canisters before participants could lay wreaths in honour of the victims.
A video shared by TheCable showed participants scrambling for safety as the tear gas spread across the area.
The incident prevented the wreath-laying ceremony from proceeding as planned.
The #EndSARS protests began in October 2020, with young Nigerians demonstrating against police brutality and calling for reforms to the operations of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Further details on Tuesday’s incident are awaited.
