The Federal Government has launched a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System that will assign a unique digital postcode to every addressable building across Nigeria.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the rollout on Thursday, describing it as a major step towards improving the country’s addressing system and making locations easier to identify.

The system, operated by the Nigerian Postal Service, assigns an 11 character digital postcode to individual buildings and links each code to geographic information.

Unlike Nigeria’s existing six-digit postcode system, which generally identifies broader postal areas, the new system is designed to provide a more precise location reference at the building level.

According to the Federal Government, each code is structured around five geographic levels: state, local government area, district, area and individual building.

Tijani said the system would improve deliveries, emergency response, e-commerce, public administration and business operations by making homes, offices, shops and communities easier to locate.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” the minister said.

He said reliable location information would enable small businesses to deliver to customers beyond their immediate areas, help families provide emergency responders with more precise directions and make it easier for government agencies to reach communities with essential services.

Tijani also linked the initiative to the Federal Government’s broader digital infrastructure plans and its ambition to build a $1tn economy.

Nigerians have been encouraged to obtain their individual postcodes through the official digital postcode platform and use them when providing their addresses to businesses, relatives and service providers.

The rollout follows the Federal Executive Council’s approval in March 2026 of a GIS-enabled alphanumeric postcode system. NIPOST and the National Addressing Council subsequently worked on developing the national framework.

What to know

Nigeria has traditionally relied on a six-digit postcode system that identifies broad postal zones rather than individual buildings. As a result, many residents and businesses still depend on landmarks, street descriptions and informal directions to locate homes and businesses.

The situation has created challenges for courier companies, emergency services, banks, online retailers and government agencies seeking to verify or reach specific locations.

The new system is intended to provide a distinct digital reference for each addressable building, which can be integrated into logistics, e-commerce, emergency response and public service databases.

However, the effectiveness of the system will depend largely on its adoption by government agencies, businesses and members of the public.
