In a continued effort to support critical sectors that drive national development, Mr. Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has donated N50 million to the University on the Niger (UNINIGER), in Umunya.
Additionally, he has contributed N10 million to the School of Nursing at Iyienu Mission Hospital in Ogidi, further strengthening his commitment to improving healthcare and education in Nigeria.
Speaking at the institution’s take-off campus in Iyi-Enu, Obi emphasized that investments in health, education, and poverty reduction are not mere expenses but strategic investments in the future of the nation. He lamented the severe neglect of Nigeria’s health and education sectors, which, he said, has led to far-reaching consequences for both individual well-being and national growth.
“Our health and education systems are plagued by underfunding and neglect, with disastrous consequences,” Obi stated. “The health sector, in particular, is burdened by insufficient funding, inadequate infrastructure, and a critical shortage of healthcare professionals. We are far below the WHO’s recommended ratio of doctors and nurses.”
Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State, stressed that the solution to these challenges lies in prioritizing the training of healthcare professionals and expanding critical infrastructure across the country. “Investing in these areas today is the foundation for our development tomorrow,” he said.
During the event, Obi, who was accompanied by Professor Stella Okunna, urged the students to focus not only on academic excellence but also on character development. “Your qualifications should reflect both your intellectual and moral growth,” he advised the students.
Bishop Owen Nwokolo, Anglican Bishop on the Niger, who oversees the institutions, expressed deep gratitude to Obi for his consistent support for education in the region. He recalled how Obi’s initiatives as governor helped revitalize education in Anambra State by returning schools to the Church and providing sustained support.
“Iyienu School of Nursing was among the first institutions to benefit from Obi’s interventions during his time as governor,” Bishop Nwokolo said. “Thanks to his efforts, the school gained accreditation, and his support continues to be felt today.”
Prof. Nebo, Vice Chancellor of the School of Nursing, praised Obi for his unwavering dedication to education. He noted that Obi’s contributions have had a lasting impact, leading the South East to emerge as one of the top-performing regions in the country’s education rankings.
Mr. Ikenna Offor, a medical student at the institution, expressed his excitement about Obi’s visit and contributions. “It’s incredible to meet Mr. Obi in person after hearing so much about him,” Offor said. “His interventions have directly impacted our facilities, including student hostels, the theatre complex, and medical staff accommodations. We are deeply grateful for his ongoing support.”
Obi’s philanthropic efforts continue to make a significant difference, laying the groundwork for improved healthcare and education in Nigeria.
