The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians about a fraudulent social media post claiming that a free National Identification Number (NIN) correction portal has been opened for data modifications.

In a public advisory issued on Tuesday via its official X handle, the commission described the message and its accompanying links as a phishing scam designed to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

“NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the commission said.

The agency assured citizens that the National Identity Database remains secure and fully protected from unauthorized access.

“We assure citizens that the National Identity Database is secure and fully protected,” NIMC stated, while urging Nigerians not to engage with suspicious links circulating online.

It specifically advised the public to avoid clicking on any unauthorized links and to rely only on official channels for all NIN-related updates, corrections, or modifications.

According to the commission, individuals seeking to update or correct their NIN records should use the official self-service portal or visit accredited enrollment centres across the country.

NIMC further encouraged Nigerians to verify all information through its official communication platforms before taking any action.

The warning comes amid rising concerns over online scams targeting personal data, with fraudsters increasingly using fake websites and social media posts to defraud unsuspecting victims.

The commission urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious messages offering identity-related services outside approved platforms.
