Nationwide Thunderstorms and Rain Expected: NiMet Issues Three-Day Forecast

In a report released on Saturday in Abuja by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) anticipates morning thunderstorms in the northern region on Sunday, with moderate rainfall in parts of Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba.

Later that day, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are expected in Adamawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Kebbi, Southern Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Borno, and Yobe.

For the North Central region, morning thunderstorms with moderate rains are projected for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Benue. In the afternoon and evening, similar weather is forecasted for the FCT, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, and Niger.

In the southern region, there are prospects for morning thunderstorms with light rains in Oyo, Imo, Enugu, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Lagos States. NiMet predicts thunderstorms with moderate rains for most areas in this region later in the day.

On Monday morning, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in parts of Taraba, Gombe, Kaduna, Southern Borno, and Adamawa, while afternoon thunderstorms are anticipated in Taraba, Borno, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Yobe.

In the North Central region, light rains are expected over parts of Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Niger, with thunderstorms and moderate rains forecasted in the FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, Benue, and Plateau during the afternoon and evening.

On Tuesday morning, the southern region may see light rains in Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Imo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Bayelsa, and Rivers, followed by thunderstorms with moderate rains later in the day.

Tuesday’s forecast for the northern region includes partly cloudy skies in the morning, with afternoon thunderstorms and moderate rains expected in Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe.

The North Central region may experience morning thunderstorms with moderate rains in Kogi, Kwara, and Niger, while the afternoon and evening could bring thunderstorms to the FCT, Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, and Kogi.

In the southern region, light rains are predicted over Edo, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, and Akwa Ibom during the morning, with thunderstorms and moderate rains anticipated later in Imo, Enugu, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Edo, Lagos, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Cross River.

NiMet cautions about the high likelihood of urban flooding in major cities due to heavy downpours, advising residents to avoid flood-prone areas. Strong winds may precede the thunderstorms, and the public is urged to take necessary precautions and adhere to safety advisories from relevant authorities. Airline operators should also stay updated with NiMet’s forecasts for effective planning in their operations.
