Resuming efforts to combat terrorism, the Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated mass trials for individuals accused of terrorism and other serious crimes against the state.

This announcement was made by Michael Abu, Head of Strategic Communication at the National Counter Terrorism Centre – Office of the National Security Adviser (NCTC-ONSA), on Wednesday in Abuja. Abu explained that these trials reflect the government’s dedication to promoting social justice and maintaining a transparent administrative system. Conducted by the Federal High Court of Nigeria, the trials adhere to the standards of the International Criminal Justice System.

Abu highlighted that the Complex Casework Group (CCG) from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, along with other essential stakeholders, is participating in the process. He emphasized that the NCTC-ONSA is coordinating and supervising the trials.

He disclosed that over 300 suspects are currently being tried, with five judges presiding over the courts and chambers established to expedite justice. The trials involve multiple stakeholders, including CCG prosecutors and defense counsel from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON).

“More than 800 case files have been reviewed, with charges drafted to ensure efficient prosecution and appropriate justice. Between 2017 and 2018, these efforts resulted in 163 convictions, 882 discharges, and 5 acquittals. Suspects found not culpable are being deradicalized, engaged in productive ventures, and integrated back into society,” Abu stated.

“The NCTC-ONSA is diligently working with relevant authorities to fulfill its mandate and support the administration’s goals of good governance and a just society,” he concluded.
