Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that he would serve only one term of four years if elected president of Nigeria.
Obi made the statement during an interview scheduled to air on News Central TV on Thursday, stressing that he had no intention of remaining in office beyond a single term.
“I want to be a one-term president because of stability. I would not stay a day, with a gun to my head, longer than four years,” he said in a clip from the interview circulating online.
The former Anambra State governor also criticised the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, particularly issues relating to borrowing, inflation and the rising cost of living.
According to Obi, Nigeria is currently facing one of its most difficult economic periods in recent history.
Obi contested the 2023 presidential election under the platform of the Labour Party, finishing behind Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party.
Since the election, Obi has remained one of the leading opposition voices, frequently speaking against the current administration’s economic reforms and policies.
