The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to officers over unauthorized case transfers and the misuse of police authority, particularly in civil disputes.
In a statement released by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP expressed concerns over unethical practices within the Force, emphasizing the need for transparency, professionalism, and accountability in handling investigations.
Egbetokun cautioned officers against indiscriminate case transfers, stating that all cases must be handled within the jurisdiction of occurrence, except where explicit approval is granted by his office. He also warned against police interference in civil matters—especially land disputes—unless criminal elements are involved.
Key Directives Issued:
- Disciplinary actions for unauthorized case transfers
- Restrictions on police involvement in civil matters
- Mandatory verification of petition authenticity
- Sanctions for filing false petitions
The IGP further urged the public to channel complaints through designated police units rather than directly to his office. He assured Nigerians of the Force’s commitment to upholding justice and professionalism, warning that any officer found abusing their powers will face strict consequences.
This directive comes amid ongoing efforts to reform police operations and restore public trust in law enforcement.
