In response to the Super Eagles’ underwhelming performance during the June FIFA window, Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has taken proactive measures by demanding a detailed technical assessment from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
The disappointment stems from the Super Eagles’ failure to capitalize on opportunities, managing only one point out of a potential six. This includes a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo and a disheartening 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic in Abidjan during Match Days 3 and 4 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.
With the team amassing just three points from a possible twelve in four games, concerns loom over their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, slated to be jointly hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Minister Enoh’s dissatisfaction is palpable, particularly given the substantial support extended to the NFF by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Moreover, the Minister underscored the importance of the Ministry’s collaborative relationship with the NFF, expressing disappointment at the apparent disparity between the support provided and the team’s performance.
In a strongly worded statement released by Senator John Owan Enoh’s office, the Minister of Sports Development expressed deep concern over the recent performance of the Super Eagles, deeming it unacceptable in light of the significant support provided by President Tinubu and the heightened expectations of Nigerian football enthusiasts.
Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Senator Enoh underscored the need for the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to furnish a detailed technical report elucidating the underlying causes behind the team’s disappointing results. He emphasized that accountability must be upheld, signaling that there may be repercussions for the evident letdown experienced by both the government and the Nigerian populace.
Senator Enoh, through his special adviser on media, Diana-Mary Nsan, stressed the urgency of the matter, noting that Nigerian football aficionados are rightfully demanding answers and transparency from the NFF. He acknowledged the unwavering passion and loyalty of the supporters, who have fervently stood behind the team, but maintained that they deserve clarity regarding the team’s performance, particularly in the aftermath of the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
