With hearts full of gratitude to God, we joyfully celebrate the Most Rev’d Dr. Joseph Olatunji Akinfenwa at this 2026 Bishops and Wives’ Retreat, marking two remarkable milestones in his life and ministry: 40 years of faithful priestly ordination and 28 years of distinguished episcopal consecration.
Archbishop Akinfenwa, who was consecrated Bishop of Sokoto on January 6, 1998 and later translated to Bishop of Ibadan in April 2000, stands as a towering figure in the Church of God, a mentor of mentors, a spiritual father, a builder of men and institutions, and a steadfast watchman on the walls of the Church.
His journey in ministry has been marked by an unwavering commitment to the authority of Scripture, deep pastoral sensitivity, courageous leadership, and an enduring passion for evangelism and church growth.
As a mentor, he has shaped generations of clergy and church leaders, investing time, wisdom, prayer, and personal example. Many who serve today as bishops, priests, and leaders across the Church of Nigeria can trace their formation and encouragement to his guidance. His mentorship has been both firm and fatherly—challenging excellence while nurturing grace.
As a builder, Archbishop Akinfenwa has laboured tirelessly to strengthen the Church spiritually, structurally, and institutionally. From diocesan foundations to provincial leadership, his imprint is evident in strong administrative frameworks, theological depth, and a culture of discipline anchored in faithfulness to Christ.
He has built not only structures but also people—men and women grounded in truth and committed to service.
As a shepherd and leader, he exemplifies integrity, humility, courage, and consistency. His voice has remained clear and prophetic in a changing world, calling the Church to holiness, mission, and faithfulness to her divine mandate. Through seasons of challenge and triumph, he has remained resolute, trusting God and pointing others to the sufficiency of His grace.
Today, as we celebrate these significant anniversaries, we honour a life poured out in service to God and His Church; a life that reflects perseverance, obedience, vision, and love. We also acknowledge and celebrate his beloved wife and family, whose partnership, sacrifice, and support have been integral to this enduring ministry.
We thank God for the gift of the Most Rev’d Dr. Joseph Olatunji Akinfenwa to the Church of Nigeria and the Anglican Communion at large. We pray that the Lord will renew his strength, crown his years with fresh oil, and grant him many more fruitful seasons of impact, joy, and fulfilment in Christ.
