The Federal Government has launched a digital self-service platform that enables Nigerians to register births and deaths, apply for birth attestations, correct civil registration records and verify certificates online.
The platform, introduced by the National Population Commission (NPC) and announced by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), is part of efforts to digitise civil registration services and simplify access to official documents.
According to the NOA, the initiative eliminates the long queues and paperwork previously associated with obtaining birth and death certificates, while allowing applicants to complete the process online or seek assistance at any NPC registration centre nationwide.
The agency noted that proper birth and death registration provides citizens with a legal identity and improves access to essential services such as healthcare, education, passports, financial services and government programmes.
For birth certificate applications, the NPC stated that registration for children under the age of five remains free at all its registration centres. However, online self-service birth registration attracts a ₦5,000 processing fee.
To qualify for the online application, the child must have been born in Nigeria, possess a National Identification Number (NIN), have at least one Nigerian parent, and one parent must hold a valid birth certificate. The commission added that the certificate can only be downloaded once after approval, while additional copies require a separate reprint application. It also noted that payments are non-refundable.
The commission explained that death registration remains free of charge. Applicants are required to provide the informant’s NIN before proceeding, while reasons must be given if the deceased did not have a NIN.
Information required for death registration includes the deceased’s personal details, place and cause of death, occupation, marital status, literacy level, usual place of residence, and whether the death was certified by a medical doctor. Applicants are also expected to select the registration state, local government area and NPC registration centre.
The NPC said a confirmation email would be sent after successful registration and encouraged Nigerians to use the online platform or visit any of its registration centres nationwide for assistance.
