According to Dele Momodu, a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s current economic difficulties stem from attempts to replicate the Lagos model in Abuja.

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television on Monday, Momodu criticized the composition of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, suggesting he would struggle to identify ten ministers or their achievements.

Momodu pointed out that many close to the president are unable to speak honestly due to their dependence on him. “If asked to name ten ministers in Tinubu’s cabinet and describe their past contributions, I would have a hard time,” Momodu stated.

He added, “What we are experiencing is the result of trying to apply the Lagos template to Abuja, which is leading to our failure.”

Momodu highlighted the contrast between Nigeria’s potential and its current state, remarking, “Nigeria is home to some of the most exceptional individuals globally. I’ve traveled widely and met Nigerians excelling in various fields. Where are they now?”

He also criticized the prevailing system, which he believes rewards personal connections rather than merit. “Nigeria cannot continue to operate on the basis of compensating friends and former schoolmates,” Momodu said.

In an open letter to Tinubu last Thursday, Momodu expressed grave concerns about the state of the nation, declaring that Nigeria is in “big trouble” with a “virtually collapsed” economy. He called on the President to halt “reckless spending” and redirect funds towards “genuine development.”
