✝?CoN BIBLE STUDY 4 FOR 3RD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY [ JANUARY 26, 2020 ]

? WATCH THE DISCUSSION HERE??

Sub-Theme:
JESUS CHRIST (1)
Topic:
THE MEANING OF JESUS IN THE BIBLE
Text: Matthew 1:18-21
Aims
To teach us the meaning of the name of Jesus and how this works out in the lives of those who turn to Him for salvation as well as those who fail to turn to Him; and also the implication for the Church.

Introduction
In both the Old and New Testaments, the name ‘Jesus’ means “help of Jehovah or Saviour”. It is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua, which was originally Hoshea (Num. 13:8, Num 13:16), but was changed by Moses into Jehoshua (Num. 13:16; 1 Chr. 7:27), or Joshua. After the Exile it assumed the form Jeshua, hence the Greek form “Jesus”. It was given to our Lord to denote the object of his mission, “to save” (Matthew 1:21). How His name relates to His mission and the implications for us constitute the subject of this study.
Study Guide

1. From the key text, identify the meaning of the name, “Jesus”. See also John 1:29

2. What do the following texts say about those who call on or believe in the name of Jesus? Acts 2:21; Acts 16:27-33; (Rom.10:13)

3. What is the danger or implication of failing to call on, or believe in the name of Jesus for salvation? John 3:17-18; John 8:24

4. If the hope of being saved is tied directly to Jesus alone, why are there so many people, even in the Church, in whose lives this salvation is not so evidenced? 1Tim 3:1-5; Tit 1:16.
Conclusion
Jesus stands for the salvation of sinners from eternal death, and it is only those who have put their faith in Him who shall experience this. Whoever fails to receive this Salvation by failing to believe in Him cannot be saved.

Food for Thought
Failure of a sinner to believe in Jesus is to embrace death!

Memory Verse
Rom.10:13 “For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”
