In a poignant gathering at his palace, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, delivered a stirring call to action, urging churches and communities to collaborate in combatting injustice and inequality while championing peace and societal advancement.

The occasion marked the commemoration of the 160th consecration anniversary of Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the pioneer of Anglicanism in the Niger region.

Reflecting on history, Igwe Achebe recounted how Bishop Crowther and his mission were warmly received in Onitsha by Igwe Akazua, who provided them with a site to establish the Niger Mission. He emphasized the imperative for joint efforts between the church and communities to tackle social injustices and disparities, asserting that fostering peace and societal development should be collective endeavors.

The event also saw the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, commending Igwe Achebe for embracing the gospel brought by Bishop Crowther and his fellow missionaries. Represented by Most Rev. Emmanuel Egbunu, he celebrated the enduring impact of the gospel and the transformation it continues to bring to Onitsha and beyond.

Archbishop Most Rev. Alexandar Ibezim of the Province on the Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese echoed the call for increased support from traditional leaders like Igwe Achebe, underscoring the pivotal role of the church in illuminating society with the message of Christ.

Rt Revd Owen Nwokolo of the Diocese on the Niger, presenting a portrait to Igwe Achebe in honor of the occasion, expressed gratitude for the Onitsha community’s steadfast support in advancing the gospel and facilitating positive societal change. The day’s activities, including a march past and a historic drama depicting the arrival of missionaries by canoe and the subsequent eradication of harmful cultural practices, underscored the profound historical and spiritual significance of Bishop Crowther’s legacy in Onitsha.
