Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (retd.) was subjected to an ambush by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State on Friday.
The assault, which transpired while they were en-route to a military base, resulted in the destruction of some military equipment.
Senator Ali Ndume, who disclosed this situation, characterized the engagement between military personnel and the assailants as intense. He further indicated that the insurgents specifically targeted high-value military assets during the confrontation.
“We are in a dire security situation. Just two days ago, Buratai was attacked at the front operations base in Borno,” he said.
“His team responded gallantly, but the insurgents managed to destroy several military assets.”
Senator Ndume conveyed profound concern regarding the escalating security challenges in Borno State, a situation he noted reflects broader insecurity across the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Ndume added that the insurgents, in most cases, not only destroy these assets but also cart away weapons and equipment’s.
This latest act of aggression has underscored the urgent need for a comprehensive restructuring of Nigeria’s national security strategy, particularly within the North-East geopolitical zone.
