A STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP OF THE ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF THE WEST- (January 29, 2021)

We as Christians are committed to praying for our leaders as instructed by scripture. We specifically pray for President Biden and his administration as they tackle both national and international challenges in the days ahead. At the same time, we have an obligation to speak out against injustice and policies that run counter to scriptural imperatives regarding justice, dignity, and the value of human life.

Therefore, we cannot support the administration’s initiatives on abortion that kill and demean human life domestically and globally. We also cannot endorse policies such as the change to transgender participation in women’s sports that would devalue the efforts of girls and women who have fought for generations to have a place at the table as competitive athletes. This in no way is meant to disregard the suffering of those in the transgendered or LGBTQ community. We believe that God loves them as he loves all of us and calls all sinners to repentance. At the same time, Christians are called to honor and adhere to the commandments and imperatives of scripture. We recognize the unique gifts God gave to men and women and the special place marriage has between a man and a woman.

We must continue to fulfill our obligation to pray for our nation and our leaders, locally and nationally, regardless of political party and to be faithful witnesses to the Word of God and of Christ.
