Bishop Owen Nwokolo expressed deep regret over the significant negative impact of official corruption on Nigeria, emphasizing that it has reached an alarming and unacceptable level. He lamented the magnitude of embarrassment caused by corruption, highlighting its pervasive influence on various aspects of the nation’s functioning.
During his Presidential Address at the 3rd Session of the 32nd Synod of the diocese, held at St Christopher’s Anglican Church, Odakpu, Onitsha, Bishop Nwokolo further underscored the severity of the situation. He elaborated on the harm inflicted by “official corruption,” emphasizing its detrimental effects not only on Nigeria’s international reputation but also on its struggling economy.
In no uncertain terms, Bishop Nwokolo condemned the prevalent culture of public corruption, denouncing it as a significant factor contributing to Nigeria’s current economic challenges. He pointed out that this culture of corruption not only tarnishes the nation’s image globally but also subjects Nigerians to ridicule abroad. The Synod, through Nwokolo’s address, unequivocally rejected this culture of corruption and its devastating consequences on the nation.
Bishop Nwokolo highlighted the disturbing trend of public officers being arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for embezzling substantial sums of money, yet often escaping unpunished. He stressed that these reports not only tarnish Nigeria’s reputation internationally but also severely impede the nation’s social and economic progress. Furthermore, Nwokolo emphasized how such incidents erode public trust in government officials, which is essential for fostering a healthy and stable society.
In response to this concerning state of affairs, Bishop Nwokolo called upon all levels of government and law enforcement agencies to redouble their efforts in combating public corruption. He urged for a concerted and sustained campaign to curb the rampant corruption plaguing the country. Nwokolo emphasized the urgent need for decisive action to reverse the current tide of corruption, recognizing it as a crucial step towards restoring public confidence and fostering genuine socio-economic development.
Despite the prevailing challenges, Bishop Nwokolo took a moment to acknowledge the commendable efforts of Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo. He praised Soludo’s dedication to implementing valuable development projects across various communities within the state. By commending Soludo’s initiatives, Nwokolo highlighted the importance of recognizing and supporting leaders who prioritize genuine progress and development in their governance approach.
He also appreciated the ways the governor was managing the security situation in the state, but urged him to intensify efforts to drive out all bandits and terrorists from every part of the state.
“The roads, electricity and water projects are not only of high quality but are initiated at the nick of time,” he added.
