Christians and leaders have been told to cultivate the virtue of humility so as to be good ambassadors of Jesus Christ on earth.
The charge was made by the Lord Bishop of Ekiti West Diocese of the Anglican Communion, Rt. Revd. Rufus Ajileye Adepoju, Jp, in a sermon he delivered on the first Sunday after the anniversary of the ascension of Jesus Christ to heaven.
Taking his text from Philippians 2:5,, Bishop Adepoju said that Jesus was an epitome of humility during his sojourn on earth; even though being God he brought himself to the level of man even unto death.
He declared: “Before you can be on top or achieve in life, you must bring yourself down and stop being proud. The fact that you are in a big position today, come down to the level of the people.
“If you call yourself a child of Christ without the spirit of God in you, you will be proud and pride leads to destruction”.
He gave examples of Kings in the Bible who were destroyed because of pride such as Nebuchadnezzar, Pharaoh and Herod.
Bishop Adepoju said that anyone who humbles himself will be lifted like Jesus, adding: “Jesus would soon come.
“Why should anybody be proud of his position when he will soon leave the place. Bring yourself down so as not to be ashamed after leaving that office. If you are too proud, you may not accept Christ”.
