TOPIC: FATHER’S INTERCESSION
TEXT: Genesis 18:23-27(NKJV)
- 18:23. And Abraham came near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
- 18:24. “Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare [it] for the fifty righteous that were in it?
- 18:25. “Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
- 18:26. So the LORD said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”
- 18:27. Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who [am but] dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord:
STUDY:
In today’s text, we see father Abraham interceding for Sodom. It was a passionate intercession from a compassionate heart. It would be recalled that Sodom was the choice of Abraham’s nephew, Lot, when a misunderstanding occurred between their herdsmen. Abraham on learning of God’s plan to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because of their sins (v.20), began to intercede for the city.
In his prayer, Abraham was not asking God to spare the righteous and destroy the wicked in the city. Rather, he pleaded that God would spare the entire city if ten righteous people were found there(vv.24-26)
This was in line with God’s word in Ezekiel 22:30, thus, “I sought for a man to stand in the gap that I should not destroy it, but I found none.”This scripture played out in the request of Abraham for Sodom-10righteous persons couldn’t be found, so Sodom could not be spared.
Even Lot’s family could not be attested for. Lot’s wife was consumed and Lot and his two daughters were literally pulled out of the destruction by the angels. Living in righteousness is important because it attracts God’s mercy. We must be careful not to join others to commit sin because you might be the one that God is looking for so as to have mercy on your generation. We must also learn God’s pattern for intercession as shown by Abraham.
PRAYER:
Dear Father, please teach me how to intercede for perishing soul. Amen!
