- 6:18. praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints —
- 6:19. and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel,
- 6:20. for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
STUDY:
Perseverance or determination, is the ability to continue against all odds, especially, when the prevailing circumstances push us to give up. Today’s text encourages us to persevere (v.18), knowing that God is not only able but is equally willing to grant our requests (Eph. 3:20).
Many times, we give up when we are almost at the point of breakthrough because we cannot persevere. For instance, we sometimes make the innocent mistake of giving God an ultimatum or timeframe to answer us before the end of a 3 or 7-day fast, and if God in his sovereignty decides not to respond within that timeframe, we develop cold feet towards Him[cite: 446].
We need to know that the spirit of God is not a servant spirit that can be threatened or commanded around the way we like. He is the King of kings. He is sovereign. He will respond only when He decides. Imagine what would have become of Elijah if he had given up after few attempts (1 Kings 18:43-44). And what would have become of Daniel had he given up after a few days? (Dan. 12:12-14). Persevere in prayer; your victory is assure.
PRAYER:
God, I receive grace to persevere in the place of prayer in Jesus’ Name, Amen! [cite: 451]
