Topic
The Futility of Rebellion Against God
Bible Passage
Psalm 2:1-12 (NKJV)
- 2:1. Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing?
- 2:2. The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, [saying,]
- 2:3. “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.”
- 2:4. He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision.
- 2:5. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure:
- 2:6. “Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.”
- 2:7. “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, ‘You [are] My Son, Today I have begotten You.
- 2:8. Ask of Me, and I will give [You] The nations [for] Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth [for] Your possession.
- 2:9. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ “
- 2:10. Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
- 2:11. Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling.
- 2:12. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish [in] the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed [are] all those who put their trust in Him.
The Message
This psalm is Messianic – it describes the prophetic, priestly, and kingly ministry of Jesus Christ. The first section (verses 1-3) describes a world where God has established order through His Anointed One, Jesus Christ. The second section (verses 4-6) portrays God’s response to the rebellious.
He laughs at them and scorns their fruitless revolt. The third section gives the king’s response (verses 7-12) to the chaotic world. He cautions the people to be wise, and joyfully submit with trembling, to His anointed one, lest he destroys them in His wrath. However, those who take refuge in him are blessed.
Many times, through our sinful lifestyles, we take God for granted because we know He is merciful and gracious. Over the centuries, people have tried to oppose God and His Kingdom, but they have always failed. In what ways does your life glorify or mock God?
Beloved, just as it is folly for the clay to challenge the potter, so it is for humans to challenge God’s authority over their lives. Let us not engage ourselves in fruitless rebellion and disobedience to God. He is our Maker, Shepherd, and Provider. He made us, not to live in opposition that will earn us His wrath and eventual destruction, but for His glory, honour, and praise.
Conclusion
Brethren, rebellion against God is not only futile but also self-destructive. The psalm reminds us of the sovereignty of God and the ultimate authority of His Anointed, Jesus Christ. No power, nation, or individual can stand against His will and prevail. Instead of resisting Him, the wise choice is to submit joyfully and serve the Lord with reverence and awe.
As we reflect on our lives, let us ensure that our actions, words, and thoughts glorify God rather than mock Him. Rebellion leads to wrath, but trust in Him brings blessings, peace, and eternal security. Choose today to “kiss the Son,” aligning yourself with His purpose and authority, and experience the joy of taking refuge in Him.
May God deliver us from every form of rebellion and grant us hearts fully surrendered to His will, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Prayer
Deliver me, O Lord, from every form of rebellion, in Jesus name, Amen!
