Brigadier General O.O. Nafiu, Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has urged corps members to embrace their service year as a platform for national development and personal transformation.
He made this call during his official visit to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Umuawulu/Mbaukwu, Anambra State, where he interacted with the 1,186 corps members currently undergoing orientation.
Commending their discipline and enthusiasm, the NYSC DG encouraged the young graduates to view their one-year assignment not merely as a statutory obligation but as a unique chance to make meaningful contributions to the country. “This is your moment to serve, grow, and leave an impact,” he said.
In his keynote address, Nafiu emphasized the value of the orientation phase, noting its role in fostering unity, discipline, and teamwork. He also urged corps members to reflect on the NYSC Anthem—not just as a song, but as a guiding principle for dedicated service.
He further advised them to actively engage in camp activities, particularly the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, and to adopt a lifestyle of financial discipline. “Respect the customs of your host communities, be responsible on social media, and show respect to one another and NYSC officials,” he added.
The visit took on a celebratory note as the DG joined corps members in marking birthdays, cutting a symbolic cake, and dancing along to “Lonely at the Top” performed by the camp’s observation squad—a moment that lifted spirits and added a personal touch to the occasion.
In a show of goodwill, Nafiu donated two cows to the camp, drawing loud cheers and appreciation from the corps members. He ended his visit with a stirring charge to see their service year as a vital step toward national rebirth.
Earlier, Anambra State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Pauline Ojisua, welcomed the DG, praising the 679 male and 507 female corps members for their orderliness and commitment. She described the DG’s presence as a great honour and a morale booster for the camp.
The event also featured a colourful cultural dance performance by Platoon 5, whose vibrant Edo display captivated the audience and added a festive flair to the day’s activities.
