TOPIC: REAL SONS ARE WORD DOERS

Text: Matthew 21:28-32

21:28  Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe.

21:29   Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation!

21:30   For we are the circumcision, who worship [a]God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh,

21:31 though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so:

21:32  circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee;

STUDY:

While Jesus was teaching in the temple, the chief priests and elders came to Him with a question concerning His authority and power. To push their argument, they lay claim to the Abrahamic coverage of their sonship. To deal with their argument, Jesus came up with the parable of two sons. The first son agreed to go on an errand for the father but did not go while the second initially did not agree to go, but later went. In this parable, the first son refers to those who are totally disloyal and disobedient to the father they initially claimed faithfulness to while the second refers to those who were thought to be disobedient in the first instance, but are now obedient, doing the father’s wish.

This parable reminds us that the real sons are not just hearers of the word but the doers. James bore witness to this when he stated, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22). God’s instructions are meant to be obeyed even when they are not convenient for us. Take a firm decision today to always obey God, even in the midst of the anti-God worldly system, and you will never regret you did.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, help me to obey your word always and so prove that I am your son indeed. Amen.
