Topic: THE NEED FOR DISCIPLESHIP
Text: Matthew 4:18-22
4:18 And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon calling Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
4:19 Then He said to them, ”Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
4:20 They immediately left {their} nets and followed Him.
4:21 Going on from there, He saw two brothers, James {the son} of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them,
4:22 and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
STUDY:
Jesus saw two brothers, Peter and Simon, fishing on the Sea of Galilee. He called them to be His disciples and they left their nets and quickly followed Him. A little while later, Jesus saw two other brothers, James and John, working in the boat with their father, Zebedee. Jesus called both brothers and they immediately abandoned what they were doing and followed Him.
The call to follow Jesus is a call unto discipleship. Discipleship is following Jesus, and learning of Him in order to become like Him. It is God’s means of achieving His eternal purpose in the lives of as many as come unto Him. To answer this call, one would have seen the priceless privilege of becoming like Christ, when compared to everything else. Simon and other fisher men that the Lord called, forsook all and followed Him. This step they took came from their conviction that following Christ would make them become all that God designed for them. Have you seen the need to deliberately follow Jesus with the sole objective of becoming like Him? Would you give up your job or all that has occupied you for Christ? Being a true disciple of Jesus Christ should be the goal of every Christian.
Prayer:
Father; open my eyes to see the excellency of the knowledge of Christ my Lord.
