TOPIC: THE GOSPEL OF GRACE

TEXT: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11(NKJV)

  • 15:1. Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand,
  • 15:2. by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you — unless you believed in vain.
  • 15:3. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
  • 15:4. and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
  • 15:5. and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve.
  • 15:6. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep.
  • 15:7. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles.
  • 15:8. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time.
  • 15:9. For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
  • 15:10. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God [which was] with me.
  • 15:11. Therefore, whether [it was] I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

STUDY:

The gospel of Christ has been greatly attacked in recent times by the so-called hyper-grace teachers. They blaze abroad their gospel, teaching the doctrines of ‘passivism’.

They teach that when we are saved, God has already forgiven all of our sins, namely: past, present, and future sins, so there is no need to ask for forgiveness whenever we sin.

Secondly, they say that once we are saved, we remain saved, which is understood as a certainty of salvation without needing to work out that salvation through a holy life that fears God. It is unfortunate that we are in a generation that finds these teachings appealing.

Amongst all who saw the resurrected Jesus, Paul’s experience is in this wise: “By the grace of God, I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.”

The Gospel is the good news of how Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. We did nothing to receive salvation, yet we must work out our salvation with fear and trembling.

PRAYER:

Dear Father, help me not to make vain your grace which is bestowed upon me.
