A shocking new kidnapping scheme, termed ‘Constructive Kidnapping,’ has been exposed by the Lagos State Police Command, with at least 16 women lured into the trap and later rescued by the authorities.
The criminals behind this operation use social media platforms to pose as friends or potential romantic partners, gaining the trust of unsuspecting victims. They entice their targets with lavish offers, including ₦500,000, business-class flight tickets, and bookings in luxury hotels, creating an illusion of legitimacy and safety.
Upon arrival in Lagos, the victims are stripped of their phones, their accounts drained, and their relatives contacted for ransom. The kidnappers issue grave threats to ensure compliance, making the ordeal even more harrowing.
Explaining the scheme, CP Olawale Ishola, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, said, “This is called ‘Constructive Kidnapping’ because the victims willingly step into the trap, believing they are pursuing opportunities or relationships. We’ve rescued 16 women from this network so far, and our efforts continue. The public must remain vigilant, especially women interacting with strangers online.”
In a related case, the police uncovered another disturbing incident involving a 15-year-old girl, Anuoluwapo Victoria, who staged her own kidnapping with her boyfriend. Reported missing on January 8, 2025, her family began receiving ransom demands the next day. Investigations led the police to her boyfriend’s residence, where she was found with a baby.
CP Ishola emphasized the importance of community vigilance, urging, “If you see something, say something. Together, we can prevent these crimes and keep our communities safe.”
