In the recent Local Government Elections in Abia State, the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) emerged victorious, securing 15 chairmanship seats, while the Young Progressives Party (YPP) captured two seats.
Prof. George Chima, Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), announced the results at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia.
“We have fulfilled the mandate given to us upon our inauguration on September 5,” he stated. “It was a challenging task, but we went above and beyond to raise awareness about the elections throughout the state.”
He highlighted that this election marked a significant achievement for the commission, as it was the first time in recent history that over 12 political parties participated in a single election. According to Chima, the chairmanship and councillorship elections took place across all 17 Local Government Areas, and he described the process as free, fair, and credible.
Chima expressed satisfaction with the commission’s performance, emphasizing that they accomplished, in just two months, what typically takes six to twelve months to complete.
The ZLP won in the following local government areas: Isiala Ngwa South, Isiala Ngwa North, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Obingwa, Aba North, Aba South, Isuikwuato, Umunneochi, Arochukwu, Bende, and Ohafia. Meanwhile, the YPP claimed victory in the remaining two local government areas of Osisioma and Ugwunagbo.
