Larry Sanger, the co-founder of Wikipedia, has announced his intention to become a member of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA).
Sanger, who has a background as a religious skeptic and philosopher, recently shared his journey to Christian faith on his personal website.
Earlier this week on X, Sanger revealed his upcoming confirmation, humorously noting that he’s “fairly sure they’ll let me in.”
He shared how the liturgy of the ACNA struck him, “I attended a local ACNA church last Sunday, and I absolutely loved the liturgy, which I found deeply spiritual, as well as the fellowship.”
He said he was drawn to the ACNA due to its “intellectual style,” structured liturgy, and welcoming community.
Sanger, who long identified as a religious skeptic, outlined the arc of his spiritual journey earlier this year in a series of blog posts:
In February 2025, he described his evolution from doubter to believer, saying that after reading the Gospel accounts in February 2020, he finally admitted to himself that he “believes in God, and needed to ’pray to God properly.’”
At that point, he realized his beliefs resembled something akin to “an Orthodox Christian faith.” However, he stressed he hadn’t yet joined a church and was still investigating the best fit.
After careful reflection, Sanger said the ACNA appealed to him because it was “entirely consistent” with his approach—welcoming to diverse Christians, yet grounded firmly in fundamentals, with an “intellectual style” that aligned with his systematic and thoughtful approach to theology.
He explicitly rejected theological rigidity and “dogmatic” carelessness. Instead, he embraced the denomination’s systematic, welcoming, and intellectually resonant style, which fit his outlook as someone committed to careful truth-seeking.
As early September 2025 approaches, Sanger prepares to formalize his faith journey through confirmation in the ACNA.
This pivotal moment caps a long trajectory, from agnostic philosopher to reflective Christian seeker, now culminating in a denominational home that resonates with both his intellectual and spiritual sensibilities.
