Osimhen’s €130 million (£109 million) release clause became inactive after his temporary move to Galatasaray, meaning the prolific striker will be available for just €81 million (£68 million) when the January transfer window opens.

“He no longer wanted to be part of the first team,” Napoli director Meluso stated during the Palermo Football Conference this week. “He had received a significant offer even before my arrival at Napoli, but [Napoli chairman] Aurelio De Laurentiis didn’t consider it, as he prioritized the club’s interests. While he may have made some questionable decisions, they were aimed at keeping Napoli competitive.”

Before his loan to Galatasaray, Osimhen extended his contract with Napoli until 2027, as the Serie A club aimed to protect their asset’s value.

If Chelsea activates Osimhen’s £68 million buyout clause, Napoli would receive £63 million, while Galatasaray would get the remaining £5 million.

Meluso referred to Osimhen’s loan move to Galatasaray as a “last-minute solution.” “It was done to ensure he wouldn’t miss the first three months of the season,” he added. “We will see what happens in January.”
